- Full Text
Mitchell, Daniel R. (Dan) Age 71, of Winnetka died March 21. Mr. Mitchell was born in Burgoon, OH, a small farming town near Toledo, where his father operated a television and radio business. He received a degree from Ohio State University in 1961 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1966. As a corporate tax attorney, he progressed through several leading organizations in the Midwest before finishing his career in 1999 at Amoco Corporation in Chicago as vice president and general tax counsel. During his tenure at Amoco, he built the Amoco tax department into one of the most highly regarded tax departments in the industry. Mr. Mitchell provided the tax counsel when Amoco merged with BP. Despite heavy demands at work, he put his family first in his life. He and his wife, Sally Mitchell, had a strong, loving marriage that lasted 46 years. While his children were growing up, he came home to eat dinner with his family and made sure to never miss school events. As a grandfather, he made it a point to see his grandchildren every six to eight weeks, despite their cross-country distance. He loved playing with the young ones and talking with the older grandchildren. Retirement allowed Mr. Mitchell the time to read for enjoyment, including three newspapers daily, magazines, and many types of books. Since 1994, Mr. Mitchell and his wife met regularly with a couples' book discussion group. In November, he led a discussion of Tolstoy's short stories for this group. Mr. Mitchell visited most states and traveled extensively through Canada, Europe and parts of South America. He and his wife enjoyed the many cultural opportunities in Chicago, including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Goodman Theater, Writer's Theater, and the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife; two daughters, Susan (Phil) Robins of Highland Park and Jill (Darren) Pratt of Baltimore, MD; and grandchildren, Gwyneth and Mitchell Robins and Conrad and Miles Pratt. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 15, at the Winnetka Congregational Church, 725 Pine St., Winnetka. Info: 847/675-1990 or www.donnellanfuneral.com.
