- Suburban homeowners have been flooding local assessor offices with questions, wanting to know why their property tax bills are higher even when assessments were lowered due to the real estate crisis. Roughly four out of five homeowners in most suburbs saw property tax increases according to an analysis by the Cook Coucnty Assessor's Office. New Trier Township Assessor JoAnn Shrier Gordon as found an unusually high number of taxpayers who did not get exemptions due to them. Chart showing the percentage of residences in neighboring suburbs with tax increases and the median change in dollars. In Wilmette 78% of the residences saw increases with a median change in dollars of + $554, a median percentage of +5.3%.
