- Because of the advent of terrorism, police attention is given to community events that may not have received attention beforehand. Comments by Wilmette's Chief of Police George Carpenter about the extensive police coverage of the July 3rd celebration in Gillson Park. Both Wilmette police and fire departments have participated in National Incident Management System training. The U.S. Coast Guard in Wilmette Harbor plans to set up "live fire" training in Lake Michigan.
