A Wilmette lawyer and autism activist has died in a car crash in Aspen, Colo.

Elizabeth Birt, 49, was one of two passengers in a Ford Taurus that was struck by a pickup truck about 9:30 a.m. Dec. 28 after the car allegedly ran a red light, the Aspen Times and the Aspen Daily News reported.

The driver of the Taurus, Steven D. Felt, 52, also of Wilmette, and his 13-year-old son, Michael, were injured.

As the mother of an autistic son named Matthew, Ms. Birt also was a tireless activist for those affected by the disorder. Ms. Birt is survived by two other children, Sarah and Andrew; her father, and her brothers.
