- A backlash against Wilmette's effort to enforce the local law against handguns against homeowner Hale DeMar led to the passage of a state law trumping local law in self-defense cases. That law gave DeMar the leverage to get his $750 ticket dropped, and he can get his two handguns back if he arranges to take them out of the village. DeMar shot and wounded Morio Billings December 29, 2004 during a home invasion.
