- North Shore legislators maintained their position against a bill that would shield gun owners from local gun laws, but the measure retained enough votes to override Gov. Rod Blagojevich's veto and became law. Senate Bill 2165, aka the DeMar bill, creates a self-defense exception to local gun bans, and passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday. Wilmette Village President Nancy Canafax said the outcome was not surprising. The Village Board may look at ways the Wilmette ordinance can be rewritten and strengthened against challenge under the new law.
