Solomon Byron Smith, 81, of Lake Forest, died Oct. 9 [1986] in his home. Mr. Smith was the former vice chairman of the Northern Trust Co., and a member of the bank's founding family. In 1857, Mr. Smith's great-grandfather, Solomon A. Smith, a pioneer Chicago resident, became one of the founders of the Merchants Savings, Loan & Trust Co., of Chicago. Mr. Smith's grandfather, Byron L. Smith, founded Northern Trust in 1889 and served as its first president. Byron L. Smith was succeeded as head of the bank by Mr. Smith's father, Solomon A. Smith. Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Solomon A. Smith II of Tesuque, N.M.; his brother, Edward Byron Smith of Lake Forest; and a sister, Caroline S. Chappell of Lake Forest. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Neff Smith; his daugher, Wendy Byron Smith; and his sister, Mari Bromwell.
