- John Francis Smith, Jr., age 71, 235 Ridge Road, Wilmette, died February 10 at his home. Mr. Smith, 71, retired as assistant chairman and former president of Inland Steel Co. in 1966. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Veronica; a daughter, Patricia Anne Lehr; three sons, John Francis III, George B. and William J.; 14 grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Mackey of Port Huron, Michigan. A funeral mass was said Wednesday by the Rev. Edmund F. Burke at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Wilmette. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
