Affordable housing push: New law mandates issue be addressed.

- New state legislation taking effect January 1, 2004, "Affordable Housing Act", will require upscale communities such as Wilmette, to approve a plan addressing the shortage of affordable housing. Illinois State Representative Julie Hamos, is sponsor of House Bill 625. Hamos will be keynote speaker at anniversary celebration of the Housing Opportunity Development Corporation on Sunday. The Corporation consists of sixteen northern suburbs, including Wilmette. Hamos will also speak on September 25th at a program for Housing Options for Mentally Ill, a non profit organization whose mission is to develop housing opportunities for adults coping with mental illness. Gail Schechter, director of the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs, comments on the new law.
