Dr. Gilman Caldwell Paynter, 29, formerly of Glencoe, died May 1 in Falfurrias, Texas. Dr. Paynter was stricken with infantile paralysis on Thursday, April 29.

At a mass meeting held the day following his death Falfurrias citizens raised money to buy an iron lung to be called the Paynter memorial. Citizens of the town are also starting a campaign to raise funds for a hospital.

Dr. Paynter served for four years in the Navy and saw service on a destroyer escort. Memorial services were held May 4 in St. Elisabeth's church, Glencoe.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Helen Hepner Paynter; a daughter, Janet Daniel Paynter; his mother Mrs. Henry Martyn Paynter of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Theodosia Podolsky of New York and Mrs. Mary Sharp of Chicago; and three brothers, Henry Martyn Paynter of Chicago, Moncure Daniel Paynter of Wilmette, and Richard Travers Paynter of Waterloo, Iowa.
