Dalton, Henry William (Died)
- Full Text
Maj. Henry William Dalton of Wilmette, executive officer in a Headquarters company of the Ninth Armored division, previously reported missing in action was severely wounded on December 18, and died the following day the War Department has notified his wife, Dorothy Foley Dalton. According to a release from the SHAEF, Major Dalton met his death when the Germans opened a sudden attack at Luxembourg. A deluge of shots from the enemy into the company command post trapped and almost doomed the entire personnel of the post. Just as two Nazi Tiger tanks were closing in, Major Dalton jumped into a nearby tank and went out to meet them. As he traded shot-for-shot with the enemy tanks, the men in the trap were able to run a gauntlet of machine-gun fire and a great number of them escaped. Major Dalton was a graduate of the University of Illinois, the Army Command and General Staff school at Fort Levenworth, Kansas, and a former insurance man. He had been in the army four years, and held a very high rating as an efficient officer. Besides his wife and young son, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Dalton, and a brother, John, all of 1029 Chestnut Avenue. A Memorial Mass will be sung Saturday, May 19, at 10 o'clock in St. Francis Xavier church in Wilmette.
