Whle playing tag with some youthful companions Monday afternoon, William MacDonald, 7 years old, 128 Lytle street, Chicago, ran in front of an automobile driven by A. M. Billings, son of the millionaire gas man, and was badly injured. He died two hours later at the Evanston hospital.
Young Billings was released Monday night on $10,000 bonds. The inquest was held Tuesday, but owing to the absence of several witnesses was continued until Friday, July 26.
The accident, which occurred under the viaduct of the Northwestern railroad at Emerson street and Ridge avenue, Evantson, is said to have been unavoidable, as Billings was not traveling more than six miles per hours.
The MacDonald boy, who was visiting at the home of William Pulver, 1930 Darrow avenue, was playing beneath the viaduct with James Hayes, 11 years old, who lives at 1920 Darrow avenue.
Billings, with Andrew McLeish of Glencoe, at whose home he was visiting, were on their way to the village when the accident occurred. As he neared the viaduct the scion of one of Chicago's oldest families slowed down his machine because of the turn.
Ran in Auto's Path
As he was entering the subway the little MacDonald lad darted in front of the machine in an effort to elude his playmates. Billings stopped the big touring car at once, but it was too late, as the little lad had been hit.
Picking up the unconscious boy from the pavement, Billings placed him in the augomobile and speeded the powerful car to the Evanston hospital. After calling Drs. A. W. Phillps and William R. Parkes and telling them to do everything in their power to save the boy, Billings drove to the police station and gave himself up. The Macdonald boy suffered a broken right leg and internal injuries. He died at the hospital two hours after the accident. He never regained consciousness.
Police Magistrate Boyer placed Billings' bonds at $10,000. T. V. Purcell, 1802 Wesley avenue, and Irwin Rew, 1128 Ridge avenue, signed the bonds.
Stories agree
Billings was completely broken up over the accident, but explained that it could not have been avoided. He said he was traveling very slowly because of the curve and also a large motor truck was in front of him. The little Hayes boy, who was playing with the MacDonald Lad, gave a reiteration of Billings' statement.
The coroner's inquest was called Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, but when it was learned that several witnesses were not present, the inquest was continued until July 26. Billings, who lives in New York with his father, came to Chicago to visit his grandmother. He was spending a few days at the McLeish home in Glencoe and was on his way there when the fatal accident occurred.- Featured Link
