Garden Party Given at Winnetka for Providence Day Nursery Drew Large Social Gathering
DRIVEN INSIDE BY RAIN
Despite This Handicap the Affair Was so Well Arranged by the Women in Charge That the Handsome Fund Was Raised
Despite the rain, which fell almost constantly Thursday afternoon, the benefit garden party given on the lawns of Mrs. James L. Houghtelling, Mrs. Herman B. Butler and Mrs. Augustus S. Peabody at Winnetka, for the benefit of the Providence Day Nursery, was a grand success. It was planned to make the affair a garden party, utilising the spacious and beautiful gardens of the three women. The rain, however, upset these plans. The entertainment was given in the Houghtelling home. The frequent downpour held no fear for those desirous to aid the worthy cause for which the entertainment was planned. Wealthy residents all along the lake shore drove through the rain to lend their aid to the benefit. Many Evanstonnias attended, while a number of automobile parties drove down from Lake Forest to be present. Although the benefit was given in the home of Mrs. Houghtelling, those present did not overlook every opportunity to stroll through the beautiful gardens. Between showers the lawns sloping gradually to the lake, were thronged with society women from all all along the north shore.
Debutantes Sold Flowers
During the short interval when the rain ceased many pretty debutantes were busy among the women walking through the gardens. The girls sold flowers and a very neat sume was realised from their efforts. The benefit was a success in every way, and those in charge are deserving a great deal of credit. As a result of the benefit the Providence Day Nursery building fund was swelled by nearly $1,000. The nursery is located at 3252 Sullivan court and sixteen children are now being cared for and forty more are asking for admittance. The nursery is a two-story and one-half frame building and is entirely inadequate to the demands. Among the features of the proposed new building is an open-air school on the roof.
