Joseph Shantz, cousin of Charles Shantz, an employee of the Central Railroad Company, is home on a short furlough. Mr. Shantz was trainer on one of the Oregon's 13-inch guns. He is a member of the Chicago Naval Reserves. As mementos of the war he has a full set of gold buttons form Cervera's coat and a shirt worn by the Spanish admiral. He also has a first lieutenant's sword and a fuse from the first shot fired in the war. Shantz was one of the prize crew sent to take charge of Cristobal Colon.
