Caught red-handed after he had attemped to gain entrance to the home of William Hogarth Hill of Evanston, by the porch climbing route, James Healy, 26 years old, formerly employed as an ice handler, 1817 [unclear] Simpson street, was arrested by J. P. Dolan, a night watchman, about 11 o'clock Saturday night afte rhe tumbled from the porch roof of the Hill home. Following a preliminary hearing Monday morning Police Magistrate Boyer held Healey to the grand jury on bonds of [unclear].
A maid in the Hill home heard a noise in the house and notified Mr. Hill. In a few minutes he located the porch climber trying the windows of the porch on the Church streete side of the house. Evidently Healy heard the commotion in the house and was attempting to escape when he jumped from the porch into the hands of Night Watchman Dolan, who was then making the rounds at the Hill home. At the preliminary hearing Healey declared that he did not remember anything about the attempted burglary. He declared that he was drunk having spent the greater part of the day in a blind pig in the Church stree road. However, he was unable to explain how he climbed the porch and made his way onto the roof over a two-foot projection extending from the twelve-inch columns.
Mr. Hill told how tracks in the snow on the porch roof showd that Healey appeared at three windows and apparently tried to gain anentrance to the home although no marks were found on the windows where any instrument had been used. Two bottles of beer were found on the porch roof where they evidently had fallen from HeAley's pockets. Healy has lived in Evanston several years and has never before been arrested on a criminal charge.- Featured Link
