Award Contract for Library

Wilmette Public Library directors announced this week that the contract for the new library building has been awarded to the Power Construction Company on te low bid of $274,941.
In making the announcement, F. Dewey Anderson, president of hte board, said that acording to present plans work will begin on the project within the next few weeks.
The new building is to be constructed on the present library grounds at the northeast corner of Wilmette and Park Avenues, which have been extended by purchase east to the alley on property formerly occupied by homes since removed to other sites. It will replace the present structure, built in 1904.

Bonds Approved in 1948
Bonds in the amount of $400,000 were approved at the referendum on the Plan for aBetter Wilmette in February, 1948.
Holabird and Root and Burgee of Chicago are architects and engineers for the project.
Members of the library board of directors include, besides Mr. Anderson, the Rev. Ross Cannon, Mrs. Bailey Shearer, George H. White, Harold H. Lundberg, and Mrs. H. G. Van Winkle. Former members who were active in teh development of plans for the library include Mrs. F. A. Cushing Smith, Mrs. Carl B. Hall, and Paul M. Plunkett.
In addition to the cost of the building, money raised from the sale of bonds is to be used as follows: $50,000 for the purchase of the additional land, $50,000 for equipment, and the balance for architects' fees, landscaping, and minor purposes
