- Lucy Andaloro, Karen Godfrey, Colleen Barrett and Courtney Gaines organized and held the school's first "Summer Fun Camp" for students entering second through sixth grade. Anyone with comments or suggestions about this summer's programs may contact Colleen Barrett.
All SFX School community families may attend a "Thank You Barbecue" and party in honor of Father Peter Wojcik beginning at 5 p.m. Aug. 7. Backyard Barbecue will be cooking hot dogs and brats. Families planning on attending should R.S.V.P. to Jackie Petrozzi.
St. Francis Xavier's athletic director Chuck Rometty is looking forward to sports programs for St. Francis Xavier School's students. This year's St. Francis Xavier sports offered will include Wilmette Catholic Football for fifth through eighth grade; Girls Volleyball for fifth through eighth grade; Cross Country for fourth through eighth grade; Cheerleading for eighth grade; Boys Basketball for fourth through eighth grade; Girls Basketball for fourth through eighth grade; Boys Volleyball for seventh and eighth grade; and Track for fourth through eighth grade.
SFX School's athletic director Chuck Rometty will be holding a mandatory parent meeting for the Wilmette Catholic Football Program's season at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10. A voluntary conditioning camp will be conducted from 10 -11:30 a.m. Aug. 11-13 at Howard Park located behind St. Joseph's Church at Ridge and Lake in Wilmette. The conditioning camp is a chance for the new players to start learning what it is like to be a part of Wilmette Catholic Football and also for former teammates to gather and practice again. Rob Sernus is the head coach for the Varsity Team and Fred Smart is the head coach for the Junior Varsity Team for 2009-2010.
St. Francis Xavier School's principal Dan McKenna and parish pastor Father Bill Sheridan welcome back all school teachers, staff, families and students getting ready to return or begin school at St. Francis Xavier for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 24. The St. Francis Xavier faculty and staff are meeting Aug. 17 through Aug. 20 for their first staff development and faculty meetings for the 2009-2010 school year. St. Francis Xavier's Home School Organization is sponsoring the opening year Faculty and Staff Luncheon at noon Aug. 19.
St. Francis is celebrating its 100th Anniversary Year of providing Catholic education to children and the parish community since 1910. St. Francis Xavier will feature new teachers and programs this 2009-2010 academic year in middle school and junior high Latin language instruction, physical education, computer sciences, music instruction and SFX's first-ever full-day kindergarten programs during this special 100th Anniversary year. The school's new library is one of the few libraries across the nation to be selected to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities 2009 We The People "Picturing America" Bookshelf awards program. St. Francis Xavier also features religious training, sacramental training and weekly Masses with Father Bill Sheridan, Father Peter Wojcik and all the priests working and living at St. Francis Xavier Parish, as well as the sacramental preparation programs provided by Sister Joyce Shanabarger, Sister Mary Ann Casey, and the student's homeroom teachers; particularly the students preparing for their First Reconciliation and First Eucharist in second grade, and the sacrament of Confirmation in the eighth grade class years.
All school families and students should have received their 2009-2010 SFX School Handbook and other important information and forms for the new school year in the mail. If any school family has not as yet received their first special mailing from the school office, they should call Marge Kaup. Monique Watts and Holly Tamisiea, the Home School Organization co-presidents for 2009-2010 school year, are hoping all returning and new school parents will take time to also review the volunteer opportunities at St. Francis Xavier School
St. Francis Xavier's Preschool will hold its "Information Night" for parents from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 18 in the preschool building located across the school parking lot north of the main school building at 808 Linden Ave.
All St. Francis Xavier New School Families may attend a Parent School Orientation Meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 in the St. Francis Xavier Parish office.
This year's St. Francis Xavier Back-to-School Barbecue will begin with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 4 p.m. Aug. 23 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Ninth and Linden, and a School Families Barbecue held immediately at 5 p.m. "Showcase St. Francis" will be held Oct. 3. Contact Diane O'Brien or Katie Bredemann.
Students are expected to be in uniform and at school by 8:30 a.m. Aug. 24. There will be a noon dismissal on the first day. St. Francis Xavier will be in session for full days Aug. 25, 26 and 27, and will have a noon dismissal Aug. 28. Kindergarten students will follow the same schedule as first through eighth grade. School will be closed for Labor Day, Sept. 7 and classes will resume on Sept. 8.
All school and parish families and friends of St. Francis Xavier School are asked to consider participating in the SFX Scrip Tuition Rebate and Fund-raising Program when purchasing Dennis School Uniforms or other "back to school" shopping for the coming school year. Contact Home School Organization Volunteer Scrip Program coordinator Kristi Schlax.
Hot and cold daily lunches have arrived at St. Francis Xavier School this year. A new program for the coming school year open to all school students, lunch will be served to all participating students beginning Sept. 8 by Chef Fredy Cuisine.
St. Francis Xavier School's Centennial All-Class Reunion will be held June 12, 2010 at St. Francis Xavier School. The Centennial Celebration will feature a 100th Anniversary All-Class Reunion Mass followed by a family-friendly picnic.
St. Francis Xavier School and Parish will feature its Children's Choir programs again this academic year under the instruction of Sarah Smith, director of the SFX Youth, Children's, and Ready To Grow Choirs.
St. Francis Xavier's "Moms and Tots" playtime will return from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 11 at Maple Park (weather permitting) for their first informal get-together of the new school year. Anyone interested in joining the "Moms and Tots" e-mail list may contact Home School Organization "Moms and Tots" 2009-2010 co-chairs Joanne Teuber.
The following programs will take place during September: The SFX School "Picture Day" with Life Touch is scheduled to be held during the school day Sept. 2 . SFX's "Junior High Forum" will also be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Xavier Room. SFX's Home School Organization and School Board "Back to School" Dinner and Annual "Pick-up Your SFX School Directory" Evening for all school parents Sept. 17. SFX Preschool Parents' Party will be held Sept. 19. SFX's annual "Parish Life Fair and Fun Run" with breakfast and Mass will be held Sept. 20. The first SFX School "Moms and Tots" get-together will take place Sept. 11 at Maple Park. The next gathering date for "Moms and Tots" will be Sept. 25 at Maple Park, located at 4th and Maple in East Wilmette.
