The body of Joseph Clapham, a Waukegan barber, was found on the lake shore at the foot of South avenue, Glencoe, early Friday morning by[illegible], a chauffeur employed by Charles H. Harmann, Lakeside Terrace, Glencoe. Not until late Friday evening was the body identified, following the inquest held at the Glencoe Village Hall.
Considerable mystery was attached to a visit made to the Glencoe village hall by a couple claiming to be from Chicago early in the afternoon Friday. After viewing the body this couple declared that it was their son and asked the Glencoe authorieies to send the body to [unclear] Webster street, Chicago. They did not leave their name. About 1:30 o'clock a telephone message was received from members of the Clapham family in Gurnee, Illinois, and an hour later brothers of the dead man arrived in Glencoe and positively identified the body. Nothing further has been heard from the Chicago couple who laid first claim to the body.
Clapham had been missing from Waukegan since Nov. 15. The body showed that it had been in the water for some time. Every indication pointed to suicide, although an open verdict was returned by the coroner's jury.- Featured Link
