Trustees Give Gage Permit to Lay Water Mains

Practically the only business [illegible] by the Wilmette Village trustees in the adjourned session Tuesday night, aside from the canvass conducted of the the vote in the village election held April 21, was the granting of a permit to Stanley Gage to lay and connect [unclear] a six inch water main from a number of vacant lots in the northeast portion of this town to the water mains which are being transferred from one side of the street to the other in Sheridan road. By allowing the work to be done now, the tearing up of pavements in the future to put the improvements in place will be avoided.

Are Working on Mains
A large force of workmen are now busy changing the water mains in Sheridan road and other streets where the new intercepting sewer is to be built. The streets are all torn up for this work and it is an opportune time for the additional mains from the Gage lots to be placed.
The land held by Mr. Gage forms a triangular vacant spot extending from Tenth street east and north of Chestnut street to the lake. Mr. Gage will install two fire plugs in addition to piping the water to the lots, thus assuring better fire protection for the residents in that section. It is possible that the lots will be platted and placed on the market within a short time, thus making another Gage addition to the village of Wilmette.

Following the granting of the permit to place the water connection to the Gage property, the task of canvassing the vote cast in the village election ten days ago was taken up. More than an hour and one-half was taken up in this work despite the fact that no close contests were in evidence. Few changes were made in the total vote cast for the different candidates from the figures given first by the Lake Shore News to its readers last Thursday.

The canvass showed that the Community House proposition was deeeated by a vote of almost two to one. The total vote for the bevying of a tax for the plan was [illegible], while those opposed to the movement piled up a total of 1,253 votes. In the first and second precincts a total of 487 men and [illegible] women voted against the plan while in the third or west side district, the men's and women's vote totalled [unclear] votes against it.
The total vote on the annexation of the section southwest of the village, known as "Oklahoma," carried by a large majority, the vote being 1,473 for the proposition to 254 [unclear] votes against the annexation.
