Notes
For the past ten years, young offenders of New Trier Township have had the option of going before other young people to determine how a crime should be punished. The Peer Jury system started in 1998 as an alternative to juvenile court. Comments by Patricia Cantor, township supervisor. During the process, the offender and his or her parents attend the jury hearing. The program is designed more as a rehabilitation option than one to punish bad behavior.
