Indian Hill Country Club at Winnetka was formerly [sic] opened Saturday afternoon with a tea dance from 4 until 7 o'clock. Members came and went in their motors as at an afternoon tea in town and a number played golf. The dining-room was used for dancing and tea was served on the wide verandas.
The guests were received by the wives of the twelve directors, who are: Douglaws Smith, president; Robert Ste3venson and Archibald W. Shaw, vice-presidents; Willoughby Walling, secretary and treasurer; J. Allen Haines, recording secretary; W. G. Hibbard Jr., George Higginson Jr., Landon Hoyt, percival Manchester, Edward S. Rogers, Thomas Taylor Jr. and Rowland B. Whitman.
Mrs. willam G. Hibbard Jr., Mrs. Willoughby Walling and Mrs. George Higginson Jr. were in charge of the entertainment.
By 4 o'clock in the afternoon the drives that lead to the clubhouse were alive with cars. In a few minutes teh orchestra was playing tango music and the dining room was full of dancers.
The clubhouse is remodeled from an old farmhouse, and the keynote of both architecture and activities is simplicity. The main hall, which is also the living-room of the club, is an attractive place, with its cool, white woodwork, buff walls and its wicker furniture, blue wicker chairs and couches with green cushions and green wicker chairs and couches with blue cushions, and other very smart, shiny black chairs and tables.
There are designs of lockers painted on the club wals that have fooled many a warm and thirsty golfer. These lockers have a history. The club buildings once were used as a roadhouse and was one of the best known "blind pigs" in the country. The buildings are of brick and stand in a grove of trees.
The club was to have been called the Winnetka Country Club until a little more than a year ago, when Mr. Rogers discovered an ancient Indian burying ground on the hightest point--Indian Hill--where lies the eighth green of the golf course.
Among others present were Mr. and Mrs. Frederick A. Delano, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Thorne, Mr. and Mrs. Archibald W. Shaw, Mrs. J. L. Houghteling and the Misses Harriet and Leila Houghteling, Mr. and Mrs. George Owsley, Mr. and Mrs. Augustus S. Peabody, Mrs. Hermon B. Butler, Mrs. Francis P. Butler, Samuel S.
