- The Evanston and Wilmette police have been searching for the man who sat on the pier at the foot of Ashland avenue, Wilmette, and refused to give aid to William Gaines, Jr., age 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. William O. Gaines, 3758 Woodbine avenue, Evanston, who was drowned in the lake Thursday about noon. Playmate Phillip Erbe narrowly escaped drowning himself when he attempted to rescue the victim. Policeman Samuel Hoth of the Wilmette police force responded to Erbe's alarm and recovered the body. The pulmotor at the Public service company in Evanston was sent for and delivered in James A. Patten's automobile. The boy could not be revived.
