- A trend toward hospital consolidation nationwide is also affecting hospitals in the northern suburbs. Decreased competition could lead to higher healthcare costs. In recent years, the Federal Trade Commission has looked into the anti-competitive effects of many hospital mergers across the nation, including the 2000 merger between Evanston Northwestern Healthcare and Highland Park Hospital.
