Rate Sailors Too Low, Declares "Dad" Elliott

"It is an insult to the men to think all they want is to smoke or dance and sit tipped back in chairs. Wholesale parties on Saturday and Sunday do not satisfy [unclear] demand." This is the opinion of J. H. Elliott, known to students and in Y.M.C.A. circles as "Dad" Elliott. The meeting at which Mr. Elliott voiced this sentiment took place at the Baptist Church on Sunday.
"As a resident of Wilmette," the speaker continued, "I want this place to set the pace in treating the men like men with serious purposes. We are rating the men too low."
Clyde DeWitt Norton of Evanston, who resigned as secretary of the Y.M.C.A. to enlist as a yeoman in the navy, was introduced by the pastor, the Reverend Francis C. Stiffler, who is also secretary of the Y.M.C.A. work in the detention camps at the Great Lakes station. Mr. Norton was present in uniform, and the announcement was received with much enthusiasm. There were fifteen Y.M.C.A. secretaries at the meeting. Mrs. Gardner Watkins and Secretary Eilert each sang solos.
