- Families who decide not to travel for vacations have many options for recreation in the village beach, parks and playgrounds. The West Side Park has assorted playground apparatus. The playgrounds are enclosed by a fence to prevent children wandering into the streets. A police officer is stationed at the park after sundown. There is also a mounted patrol by "Ted" J. Long, a veteran horseman, employed by the Park District to keep an eye on the children at the west side park and the crowds at the bathing beach. He is the official "traffic director" in the Wilmette Park District. The horse, "Nelly," was formerly owned by Jess Willard in Chicago. The policy of making parks into playgrounds has been carried out under direction of L. K. Gillson, president of the Park District and F. [Floyd] L. Bateman.
