- Fred C. Lang, 80, of Wilmette was charged with breaking the Wilmette handgun ordinance by keeping two antique pistols in his house. Police say he voluntarily turned the two guns over to them after a couple of Wilmette 11-year-olds said they had rung his doorbell, just to see how he would react, and that he chased them with a gun. The girls later retracted their story. After the girls's claim, police visited Lang's house and asked him if he had handguns. In an upcoming court appearance, Wilmette will seek a judge's order to have the guns destroyed, or moved to a safe place outside the village.
