Schramm, Katherine (née Schindler)

Mrs. Katherine Schramm, 463 Park avenue, Glencoe, will celebrate the 83rd anniversary of her birth on next October 8, having been born on a farm just southwest of Winnetka. in 1856. Her father, Michael Schindler, was the first station agent of the Chicago and North Western railroad at Glencoe, moving there when Katherine was two years old. She relates that a conductor on one of the trains used to take her with him to Chicago and return. Her father later returned to the farm, and was employed in the brick yard of Feltmann and Wilhelm, where Katherine also worked when only ten years old, to earn "pin money.”
She was married May 10, 1882, to Frank X. Schramm, whose father Mathias operated the first tavern between Chicago and Milwaukee. It was a log building and stood on Green Bay road just north of Glencoe's North School. After the death of his father Mr. Schramm operated the tavern until the village voted "dry"
