Description
Full Text

Mrs. Anthony French Merrill, familiar figure on the north shore because of her lectures on books and current events, died Sunday, December 3, at the home of her daughter in New York. She was 78 years old. As late as this year Mrs. Merrill continued her lectures, presenting her twelfth series. She was a grandniece of the pioneer novelist, James Fenimore Cooper, and the daughter of pioneer educator, Fenimore Pomeroy, for many years the superintendent of Milwaukee schools. Her grandfather, Seth Pomeroy, was commander of the Massachusetts troops at the opening of the Revolutionary war. Mrs. Merrill preserved youthful enthusiasms and a liberal perspective. Her annual lectures were a constant source of inspiration to the many people who heard them. Mrs. Merrill was an honorary member of the Society of Colonial Dames. She was a member of the Forthnightly and Chicago Woman's club. Recently she had received an honorary law degree from Loyola university. The Woman's club of Wilmette, the Winnetka Woman's club, and the Woman's Library club of Glencoe are some of the north shore clubs where Mrs. Merrill had been a popular figure.
