WARE The North Shore is in for a treat. March 17, the New Trier Dramatic club plans to present "Pomander Walk," a de- lightful three^act comedy by Louis Park- er, the author of "Disraeli." The title is 01 a certain commun- ity where live some delightfully unusual characters. There is the one eyed admiral with his beliefs as to how the settlement should be run. There is a love affair for this character "for a widow finally gains her ends and secures him in holy wed-lock. Then the most brilliant love affair, that of Mar- jolain and Jack Sayle, of whcih noth- ing must be told until you see it on the stage. Even the hunch-back violinist is involved in still another love affair. Sure- ly you can imagine what laughable and interesting situations will be obtained from these three romances who gave themselves more deliberately to the cause which he espoused from the first. It was inevitable also that he should express his thoughts and his feel- ings with perfect freedm, whether writ- ing to or about President Wilson . . . within the limits of this brief notice it is not possible to illustrate by quotation the vivid qualities of mind and spirit which shine through Page's letters . . Mr Hendrick was fortunate in the op- portunity to deal with biographical ma- terial of such permanent, historical and human value. The skill and effective- ness with which he has handled it are worthy of special praise. Athertonâ€"Black Oxen "The years like great Black Oxen tread the world, And God the herdsman goads them on behind." _ ,T W. B. Yeats. Gertrude Atherton has chosen for her latest and best novel since The Conquer- or The Tower of Ivory and Perch of the Devil, a theme n^ver_treated_jn_Jic more difficult than any other production has required. The stage crew are un- dertaking to construct all the setting themselves. The set calls for five sepa- rate cottages each with a movable door and window, a river and a gasbo or sum- mer house. The play is delightfully different. The setting is very unique and all the char- acters unusual. In fact this might be called a character play. "Pomander Walk" will be presented at the New Trier high school auditorium. be close to the heart of all of us, and palpitatingly so to the heart of every woman. In her new book, Mrs. Ather- ton, long, long recognized as one of America's distinguishexL novelists, un- folds a drama which for psychological penetration and insight into the deeper recesses of woman's nature has rarely b«-en equaled in fiction. The background oi the novel is the -fashionable and lit- eracy New York of today, says the pub- lisher's note. The story centers around the beautiful Mary Zattiany, a woman born into one of the old New York fam- ilies and who has lived the greater part Stage Setting Difficult ,nes anu W1IU lia* „»«. â€".»â- --â€" *-â- - The sc^nerx_5Jid^slage-setting-jis^much Tjf-her fife in the diplomatic circles of Public Library News and Reviews . There are probably few living essay- ists in America more beloved than Henry Van Dyke, and admirers of "Little Riv- ers" and "Fisherman's Luck" will find the same appeal in this latest volume. <<By companionable books T mpan those â€"tliat are worth taking with you on a journey, where the weight of luggage counts, or keeping beside your bed, near the night lamp," says Dr. Van Dyke. The authors of some of the books are Robert Browning, George Eliot, John Keats, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Wil- liam Wordsworth. Hendrickâ€"Life and Letter* of Walter H. In- to^ the three chapters preceding it, near- ly the whole story of Page's life before he sailed for England in May, 1913, as -------Ambassador of the United States to Great Britain, is condensed, says the At- lantic Monthly. In October, 1918, he landed in New York, shattered in health, with hardly more than two months of ------life"oefore Tiim, a "war casualty" if there ever was one. Using the eyes of his head, as an ambassador should, to ob- serve and interpret the country to which he was credited, he also used "his heart . . .It was inevitable that he should lose aJJ patience with those countrymen Europe, and the brilliant Lee Clavenng, columnist and dramatist. The conflict in the souls of these two, inherent to the theme of her novel, is gradually and skillfully developed by the author in some of the most daring and most deeply moving scenes which she has ever writ- ten. ___ SURPLUS STOCKS U.
