BBSBJI THELAKE SHOR* â„¢w&. FRIDAY. TUNE 23,192g ILIUM li.JILUlj Bntered at the postoffice at Wllmette, Illinois, as mail matter of the second class, under the act of March 8. 1879. FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 1922 -----------FRED SMITH ~ We never heard Fred Smith's philosophy of life. He never ex- ~pf essed to us arsharply outlined program which, if faithfully ad- hered to, would lead one upward along the road to success. He may have evolved a plan of living and he was thoroughly qualified to give advice, for Fred Smith was a successful man± suc- cessful in business, an ideal neighbor, a steadfast friend and the best type of community leader. â€"We have evolved a plan of liv- ing, though youth and meagre ex- perience warn us not to be too eager to offer advice. Our, plan of living is to live as helpfully and sympathetically as did Fred Smith, and to take advantage of the advice to whtctrlie-peThttpsr -never gave expression, but which, nevertheless, came to us by ob- serving the splendid example he gave to all who were fortunate enotfgh to have met him in a business or social way. ^^^- Fred Smith possessed a lovable personality. We liked him because he was exacting, straightf6rwararahlTs1n^ cere in every business transaction. We liked him because he was a friendly sura. Never did he en- ter the editorial "sanctum, sanc- torum", without the friendly greeting and the staidly humor- ous sTory that was always to the point and not to be considered too lightly, j ii We liked him featuse be was a Icindly man. Hundreds of north shore men, called away from their homes to take their places in the fighting ranks of the country, knew Fred Smith as the fatherly man who, as- a member ojjtig conspicuous element in the . trial and business life of the nation is a thing of the past, a past too recent, to be sure, to permit forget- fulness, but yet gone, if there is the proper meeting of the new condi- tions. He pleads for right practices in the commercial life of the people, for an abandonment of those poli- cies that were only too obvious dur- ing the artificial prosperity of the war years, Honesty and uprightness are not incompatible with business success. "Live and let live" is a motto quite applicable to the business world. Greed and selfishness cannot bring a lasting soundness to the business life of the nation, nor will they yield the conditions under which may be developed that better understanding and spirit of co-operation between labor and capital that must come if there is to be efficient working of the machinery of industry. Evidence is abundant that the way to adjustment of the differ- ences between employer and em- ployed is not to be easily found. There is in neither group the spirit of fairness and readiness to give what is due. This is the time, when the clouds of depression are begin- ning to roll away,^for aiittle giving on eactfi side, for making the effort to understand the point of view of other groups and for readiness to divide both the good and the hardships that are to be found in every commercial undertaking* Before you go on your vacation get a Wave â- v DANIEL GANS HAIR 1SHOP PHONE 729 OPPOSITE NORTH SHORE HOTEL 1610 CHICAGO AVE. if Draft BoafdToi~X^stfict No. 7, refrained fronTTa^ngTindue ad- vantage of the great authority ^celdiirliilnr^or he^as-knid^ when he might have been harsh, considerate S|of IS the individual, when he might have turned a deaf ear to the many anxious in- quiries and pleadings, m There isn't a man among those fellows who didn't love, as well as re- spect:'.him. pf«|^|^^^^^Si^^^| "We liked him because as sec- $PS§ WSm tlf w _ e Guard, he displayed the rare qualities that 'denote-. leadership^^lillMl^- 1 We liked him as treasurer of the Emergency Commission that « aided Wilmette Tornado sufter- ers; in*which capacity he showed E:<«^eUeni'iu4ginent 'm discerning 11'>rthe^needs ' of â-  hisiiinfortunate g-neighbors. l^^^^mSMS "^^lA?Vliked him because^ jthough" he left a flourishing business in mm a sina^coiintry town to take his ' in the business life of a 30 Colors They last twice as lengas-brâ€" coated shingles or natural wood; are proof againsrdry rot* decay, worms and weather.
