Free seed packages were' originally distributed by the government on the theory that they encouraged the pub- lie to plant gardens. But why not also distribute free garden tools, fer- tilizer, and farm machinery? If the government wants to promote gar- dening, it should spend its money on scientific research that would do food raisers real good, rather than waste its seeds on people who have not asked for them and many of whom will throw the seeds away. - .Resolutions of condolence, cards or thanks, obituary poetry, notices of entertainments or other affairs where an admittance charge will be made or a collection taken, will be charged for at regular advertising rates. Entered at the postofflce at Wilmette, Illinois, as mail matter of the second class, under the act of March 3, 1879. i_-____________ FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1921 The Meaning of New Year's Day Coldly philosophical people can see no sense in celebrating the New Year. January 1 is just the same as December 31, they argue. „, Nothing happened when this artificial and meaningless division of time passed, so why quit work and Celebrate, just as if humanity had accomplished some noteworthy achievement? This thought overlooks the signifi- cance of the passing of time. Our years slip by with the rapidity of a swiftly passing stream. The days melt into each other like the eddies in the smooth flowing river. Time drops out of sight without attracting attention, so that life passes beyond our grasp before we know it. Men and women go on from youth to middle life and old age, scarcely realizing the changes.- It is a useful thing to have a New Year's day come along, to remind them of the rapid- ity of the flight of time. It should be a day "pf retrospection and anticipa- tion. People should ask themselves what they accomplished in the previous 12 months. What did they do to im- prove their own equipment for life, to rise to better attainment, to achieve Things for their community and their country? If New Year's Day can not bring some sense of positive gain in tjnr^past year, there is something radically wrong-about a person's life. And so the old.idea of turning over a new leaf and making new resolu- tions is a good one, much as it has been derided. - No person is worth much, unless he does from time to time resolve to make a fresh start, to accomplish more in the future than in the past. Not necessarily to make more money and acquire more ma- terial success, but to develop a finer personality and to be of greater serv- ice. New Year's Day brings human .life to a realization that life .is moving swiftly and we must all seize its op- portunities as they pass. Co-operation Between Organizations NEW TRIER QUINTETS WIN TWO FROM HYDE PARKERS New Trier High school heavy and lightweight basketball outfits shone again this week in taking games from the Hyde Park tdssers at_the New Trier gym on Tuesday^vening. Tfco north shore heavies captured the main tilt 35 to 20 while the lights nosed out their rivals 16 to 12. Whitset, of the New Trier heavies, was the star of the evening, sinking ten free throws in twelve chances. Many towns are getting good re- sults by the idea of the "Community chest," by which they make one drive for all the philanthropic causes that will need funds for the year. One person can canvass for a half dozen causes as well as for one. People will give more freely if they are told that this one subscription covers the whole field of charity work. Some people may say that it would not be possible to obtain on a single drive as much as could be had by several. But the organizations should co-operate so far as possible. In some localities recently the Red Cross went over'^fhe towns for their splen- did work, and then Anti-Tuberculosis societies immediately went over the same field to sell Christmas seals for that excellent cause. Two such drives should be consolidated, so as to save the time of the workers and avoid irritating., people by incessant appeals. WHIST TOURNAMENT To liven up the town's long winter evenings the American Legion post of Strathcona, Minn., challenged the citizens to a whist tournament. The final game of the series lasted until 3:30 a. m., the ex-soldiers winning. The movement to limit armaments will not have achieved ful^ success unless it 'takes steps to end the horrors of this form of fighting. Yet it is a tricky problem to deal with. "The nation that attempted to build a big battle ship contrary to its agreements, would be detected in its treachery. But a country could develop elaborate plans for gas war- fare in secret laboratories, and be all ready to spring its fiendish plans on an unprepared world at short notice. Ardently as people may desire to ^etrid of this^evilish form of war, the attitude of other countries must be considered. Our statesmen must not leave our cities at the mercy of a hostile foe. For the present it seems to be the regrettable truth, that the scientists must study the art of chemical warfare, so if this countryy were^~attaclced in this way it would be able to defend itself.
