THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, JUNfe 24,1921 Public Library News and Reviews BY SUE OSMOTHERLY. LIBRARIAN Now. it can be told, Sir Philip Gibbs. Is there a man better qualified to write about "The Great War" in a more authentic and interesting and scholarly fashion than Sir Philip Gibbs? His book, "Now it can be told " is a resume of war activities, the effects of war upon belligerants and non-combatants. It is an inter- pretation of the psychology which may bring about war. It is written with the purpose of getting deeper into the truth of this war. and of all Warâ€"not by a mere detailed^ narra- tive of events, bul_,Tatkei!__as_the truth was revealed to the minds of men, in many aspects, out of their experience; and \by a plain state- ment of realitiesr^howcver painful, to add something to the world's knowledge out of which men of good-will may try to shape some new code of internaeional morality, pre- venting or at leait postponing ano- ther massacre of youth. Growth of the Soul. Knud Hamsum. You have read that Knud Hamsum has been awarded the Nobel prize for literature for his Growth of the soil, soil" of which H. G. Wells says, "I do not know how to express my admira- tion for this wonderful book." Critics everywhere, proclaim this not only one of the masterpieces of the pres- ent time but of all time. Not to have read Growth of the soil, is to be unfamiliar with the best in current fiction. It is the story "of Isak, a farmer, and Inger,, his wife, who cre- ate the miracle of life out of the vir- gin soil. It captivates the imagina- tion more than the convenional ro- mance.
