FRIDAY JUNE 3 1921 The Legal Profession and the Election It is a significant thing that the whole legal profession of Cook coun- ty should ally itself with the anti- Thompson"campaign forces, but is not sufficient to ensure the successful cul- ninatjon of the fight which they arc making. The lawyers are fairly nurrr- erous but they are far outnumbered by frKe office holders and those who are receiving some special favors because of their devotion to the city hall regime in Chicago, and will be negligible in the voting on June 6. unless they are backed by the ele- ment of the electorate that believes that the judiciary should be free from any ties to the patty machine in pow- er in the city and "the country. The action of the Cook county law- yers is useful to the common citizen as showing the opinion held by those who are in a position to know a little of the inside workings of the courts and the effect that political obliga- tion would have upon the judges. It serves as an example of what it is expedient for others to dq, as a warn- ing to the general public to act de- cisively in order that the courts may .be saved free from, the influence that emanates from the city hall and de- termines the action of those who owe allegiance to the powers there. Unless the vote of the Cook county lawyers serves to inspire voters in other professions and of no profession at all to help to defeat the Thompson -ticket, it will have served no purpose except to show the quality of the citi- zenship of the lawyers themselves. But such an endorsement of the anti- Thompson ticket should be effective to convince wavering or indifferent citizens of their obligation to do their plain duty on election day, June 6. Dr. Miller.
