THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1921 duced. If. for instance, the Mormons should desire to build a temple in Wil- mette, the teaching of that sect ought not to debar them. But aside from any question of be- lief or practice there are some things in connection with the proposed struc- ture about which the people of Wil- mette are entitled to be concerned: First: At a recent meeting when two representatives of the Bahaists presented their claims to the board ~6t trustees it was positively stated by one of them (Mr. Mills) that they do not know the use to which the building is to be put. He stated that they would have no priest, no c'ergy and no .services in the sense that we use the word "service" in our churches. It seemed from all that could be elicited by question- ing that the building was to be erected as a memorial or monument merely to typify an Idea. However that may be. Mr. Mills stated that they were expected to erect the building and . then Abdul Baha would tell them how it should be used. The first question, therefore, is: Shall the board of trustees is- sue a permit for the construction of a building to people who do not know and cannot state the use to which it is to be devoted and which is to be left to the direction of a non-resident alien living in Asia? Second: It was stated by Mr. Mills that Bahaism is not a religion and that the Bahaists have no or- ganization. Who is it that makes application for the permit and to whom will the building belong when it is completed? It is stated that the legal title to the land is held by a trustee. Trustee for whom? And what are the terms of the trust? If there is a trust there must be a beneficiary. Who is It? Its promoters stated that there is no organization of any sort back of the project. Is not our board of trustees entitled to know whether or not there is any responsible per- son or organization back of the ef- fort to build an edifice which it is claimed will cost $l,500,00ft? This inquiry is pertinent in connection with the following suggestion. Thirdr'ISreTibTThe" trustees en- titled to consider the obvious im- possibility of completing the build- ing? It is stated it is to cost $1,- 500,000. It is not claimed that as much as $300,000 is on hand for the purpose. Where is the balance to come from? I believe the other representative at the board meet- ing (Mr. Randall) stated that they had fewer than 10,000 adherents in this country. Any person at all in- telligent concerning modern world conditions knows that the Bahaists cannot expect large financial help from. the . countries where their membership is strongest. What then is the answer to the question? It lies in their fancy that their movement will soon sweep this country. They do not seem to realize that more and more this practical western_worid_ demands that religion justify itself by its works and that no religious move- ment which does not involve a large . social program for the relief of the suffering, the feeding of the starv- ing and the betterment of society can call to its aid in large measure the resources of the people of this country. All who have made the test know that the world today is impatient of fine phrases and meta- physical discussion. It demands service, relief, better living condi- tions, as well as spiritual exaltation. It is in the name of these that re- trustees have properly declined to is- sue a permit for that purpose alone. No one seems to know how many years or centuries It will be if in- deed it may ever be, until this build- ing is completed. Unless one can believe that a miracle is to be per- formed he must believe that none Of US n«W living will j*ee its jmmplft- WOODBURY & CO. It is impossible for any sect without a program which includes these things to get money to erect a million-dollar building. If the Bahaists have a social program, they have not -Ofc. fered it to the world as yet, and without a large program of service for humanity as well as for the wor- ship of God their temple can never be built in a place like this. No one except a mere enthusiast can doubt this. The history of the Christian religion, the only religion that sur- vives and leads civilization, is suf- ficient proof for men who ascertain truth by, relying upon facts as well as mysticism. What then will be the result? It is understood that the plans for the entire building are not now to be presented" but permission is sought only to sink some caissons. When travelers hereafter look upon It and inquire, "What is this?" the answer will be, "This is Wilmette, the place that tried to build a Bahal temple." The name of Wilmette will inevitably be linked with the fail- ure. â€" ~ ~ The history of the Bahai move- ment in Persia and Turkey is not such as to entitle its American pro- moters to the desired permit as a matter of favor.
