2 . THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1920 whole amount in most cases. In Wil- mette it is just about 5% of the whole. From the above it is obvious that districts with a low assessed valuation and a large school popula- tion are short on school funds. This means over crowded rooms and cheap teachers. Such schools teach nothing but the base essentials. They have no Manual training, Domestic science or Physical training. The remedy for this is a larger state appropriation. In this way a district where great wealth is con- centrated will bear its share in the education of all the children of the State. The joint meeting of the Superintendents and the School Board associations recommended that $20,000,000 be appropriated by the state this year for the Public schools. The education of our children is a national responsibility as well as the concern of the state, and should be given as much importance as Agri- culture or Commerce or any of the other great departments of our gov- ernment. This means that education should be represented in the Presi- dent's Cabinet. A bill was before •the last session of Congress with such a provision and also provided for an appropriation of $100,000,000 to be distributed among the several states. This bill was not passed but will be presented again to the pres- ent Congress. The passage of these measures is the concern of every citizen and every opportunity should be taken to impress the needs of the schools upon our representatives both in Congress and in the State Legislature.
