THE LAKE SkolETStW^'F^ $100,000 BREAKWATER Will AID NEW BEACH KiMt^: Park District's Proposed Recreation- ;, al Grounds Will be Benefited by ,,, Erection of Great Lake Wall ;|g While Wilmette residents are httg- |ging closely any warm spot during jtliese days of near-zero weather, ^slippery streets and icicles, a more |;;cr less summer-like bit of news is revealed in the recent budget ap- propriation of Sanitary District. That part of the budget which may revive thoughts of cool plunges in the lake on hot summer days reads: "Trustees of the Sanitary District recently voted $100,000 to construct a breakwater at Wilmette harbor, for the purpose of protecting the outer^ work of the power plant of the canal." Incidentally it may be of great benefit to the proposed bathing beach of the Wilmette Park District, which contemplates a great recreational site and modern bathing beach on the strip of land bounding the northwest side of the harbor. According to George W. Paullin, one of the trustees, who was reached yesterday at his Evanston home, it is the intention of the Sanitary board to make this breakwater a continua- j Hon of the one which now runs near- ly northward, the addition to form a right angle by being constructed directly east about three hundred feet.' The construction oF a larger break- water has been contemplated for some time because the present structure was too small to prevent the lake sands from shifting into the works, resulting in insufficient water for the flow. Construction, Mr. Paullin said, would probably begin within the course of a few weeks. Following the construction of the breakwater. another $100,000 will be expended upon improvements. The advantages of the breakwater to the proposed bathing beach, can not be underestimated, said Harry W. Hopp, secretary of the Park District. Although it would be impossible to predict until construction commenc- ed, the extent of the improvement to the land, Mr. Hopp declared it was his belief the breakwater would re- sult in the forming of a remarkable level beach.
