ISl THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1918 FIND COMPENSATION IN RED CROSS WORK Mother Tells Director How Her Work For the Red Croat Ha* Helped in Her Sorrow*. GIVES SONS TO THE CAUSE Work Makes Up for the Empty Places in This Woman's Home. By Bertha Downing Magnus (Chicago Chapter of the American Red Cross.) An unobtrusive little woman in deep mourning slipped quietly into my office a few hours after the first news of the sinking of the Tuscania was received. I looked up from the pile of papers which I had been daz- edly trying to scan, to meet a pair of gentle brown eyes fixed sympa- thetically on mine. "Hard to work today, isn't it?" said she. I nodded. "People are depressed everywhere over the news," the soft voice went on, meditatively. "Today, for the first time, many are taking the war se- riously. 'This is war, a grim busi- ness,' they are saying.* "Others, who have known the truth all along are deeply anxious. Moth- ers who have sent their sons away to the army are trembling, praying that their loved ones' names be not included in the list of missing. Waiting—waiting in suspense, not knowing whether they may rejoice or despair—it is the lot of women in wartime, but harder to bear than the most dreadful certainty. I too have my share in it," unsteadily, while a bright drop gleamed in the corner of a brown eye,—"but perhaps you, also,—no?" "It isn't that," I put in hastily, "I . only sit at the roadside, watching life stream by. Perhaps I have grown over-sensitive to the pain o| others. through much observing, fiut never j arnind me. Just say, please, so that I ||#nay convey the message, what all {*'iijyou sad-eyed mothers are going to ; |jdo next. Is there any way that your p:J.i|wounded hearts may be bound up and p'-imade useful again? Or are you go- L jng to hang, like a cold, heavy mill- KCvstone- around our......nation's neck? That is a cruel queston, I know, but ^war is ruthless, and broken pumps are only so much on the liability side, an asset for the enemy!" Fire flashed from the brown eyes at this. "No," she said, firmly. "That is just what I came to see you about. I want you to announce a big mass- meeting of mothers, of sisters, of sweethearts—in fact, every woman who has given a dear one to the colors should be asked to come. I ■want to tell them what the war means to me,—what it ought to mean to them. "One whom I loved has given his life for the allied cause. Another, I sent away, like many a Chicago mother, with a smile that hid the hacking of my lips, while I peered far down the track to catch the last wave of his cap. as the train carried him on. Then I, like the others, crept back to my empty home, scarce know- ing how I got there. "Empty, did I say? But no. As I sat down to the deserted table, break- ing my bread to an accompaniment of tear-drops, in desperation my spirit reached upward, groping for a sustaining arm on which to lean. Then through my chill agony, I looked across the table to the vacant chair. A miracle had happened! There, in the beloved place, sat a shining figure. Rays of light from a crimson cross over his head envel- oped the room in their soft glow. "I no longer despaired, for I knew the truth. Patriotism had come to abide in my house—a glorious substi- tute for the absent,—forevermore to be a part of my soul, even as the beloved boy from whom I had just parted. "In work dictated by the Red Cross, my happiness shall lie after this vis- ioning. My selfish grief shall no longer impede the cause, for the same energy that might have been spent in idle weeping will go toward the preservation of human life, in accord with the principles laid down by the 'army of mercy.' I can wish my sis- ters no greater blessing."
