Illinois, under the Act of March 8, i$19. 1THU3RS03rSv ^ THE WEST AND THE EAST â- .*•â- â-  In the recent election there was one, and doubtless more than one, vote cast in, California by a woman of Chinese descent. And yet in Boston, the woman who numbers among her antecedents the founders of the nation is not considered worthy to exercise that right. Cer- tainly a screw is loose somewhere. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ A GOOD PLACE TO BEGIN From the report of the commissioner of internal revenue we learn that in the months of July, August and September of this year there were nearly "4,000,000,000 cigarettes sold in the United States, an in- crease of a billion over the sale of same three months a year ago. In the light of such statistics the talk of the increased cost of living loses some of its weight. Where could economy better begin than in the case of an article which-can be_of no pQssibleJjenefit_and,is known m^» harmful f SEEKING JHE LOST " Twenty-five thousand lost Presbyterians are being sought in New Torlc. They have not been kidnapped, nor has any other untoward fate befallen them. They have just neglected to affiliate with the city church after leaving those which numbered them among their members elsewhere. Doubtless there are proportionate numbers missing among other denominations and in other localities. It would be to the advantage of everyone concerned could the lost be found and the relation re-established. Perhaps there are some in Evanston who are only waiting to be sought. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ .♦â- .... WOEUNTOZIONl The hosts of Zion are drawn up in battle array with the followers «>f Voliva lined up against the employes of the Cook Electric eom* pany. The method of fight shows an interesting combination of bibli- cal and modern times for the enemy felj upon the worshippers with stones as they were entering the tabernacle to pray, the while the modern convenience-of a searchlight aided tjjem in accuracy of aim. We may expect to see the tabernacle becomei a stronghold of war, and that when the coming of the "Messiah" is imminent. What will he do to cleanse the temple? • ♦ ♦ ♦.-.# ♦ THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE A storm of protest has arisen about the head of Mr. Cosmo Hamil- ton, the English playwright, who has laid upon the shoulders of the university woman of America the burden of the charge of race suicide. Backing their statements with statistics, representative women from various colleges have spoken to refute the charge. Not only do col- lege women marry and have children in as large proportion as those of any other class, but those children are more carefully and intelli- gently reared than the offspring of the average parents without the advantage of that training. Furthermore, by way of good measure, pressed down and running over, the university woman is able again to cite statistics to show that divorce is much more rare among the possessors of the sheepskin than is the case in other classes of women. AN ILLUSTRIOUS EXAMPLE To be a suffragist or a Christian t This is the question which was fretting the brains of the members of the Woman's party at their recent meeting. It is the inferior position of women in the Bible, the monopoly of all the distinction by men, and Paui/s injunction, "Women* Obey your husbands/' which has caused consternation among the orthodox of the fair sex. The remedy is a feminine one. Revise the Bible; make it up-to-date, comme ii faiit, so to speak. We would suggest that instead of considering the slights to which women isre subjected in certain passages of the Scripturef the ease of Bb- boeah, "who judged Israel,1' be taken as one more in the spirit of the present. Certainly Deborah was ,lWr among the Israelites when their trreatest general declined to go against the enemy unless the prophetess consented to be one of the party. VdrUy, Deborah is the saint for the suffragists. Next week they are to submit their efforts to the criticism of the general public, instead ahiar ah audience of their neighbors and friends. For eleven years this company of amateurs has been training under the tutelage of Mrs. Pelham, steadily gaining in their hold upon dramatic art. The plays which they are to present in the Fine Arts theater are new to Chicago playgoers, all by English playwrights "Justice," by John Galsworthy, is said to have been the inspiration of the prison reforms instigated by "^nston Chtjbchill; "The Pigeon," by the same author, has met with success in the Little Theater in New York. The third play, '5The Tyagedy of Man," is the work of John Mabstiblo, who his created a stir in the circle of English dramatic critics. , , ^fe* H^ H^ are all amateurs but so, too, were the Irish players of whom Lady Gregoi become a source of national pride. ^*% v yâ€" We believe in the Hull House players and shall expeet to see some- ^ time the rise of a real dramatic genius.
