Day Nursery To Open Soon Located on Corner of Grove Street and Wesley Avenue Evanston Will Be Open About Oct. 1 First One in Evanston Evanston's first day nursery will be opened about Oct. 1 at the corner of Grove street and Wesley avenue. The preparations for the new venture are in the hands of hte Catholic Woman's Club. A large eight-room house with ample grounds has been purchased by Mrs. A.H. Gross and the use of it has been donated tothe club as long as they will maintain a day nursery. Extensive improvements were being made in the house. Large sleeping porches will be added, a healt department room arranged, and various other changes that will render the house more ideal for the work among the children. Matron in Charge The day nursery will e in charge of a competent matron. A small charge, in fact very insignificant in comparison to the value received, will be made for each baby left during the day, but under no circumstances will a child be turned away just because its mother cannot afford the price. Besides the matron there will be a visiting nurse and a physician will call at the house each day. It is the plan to have each chid examined to see that it has no contagious diseases of anything that would imperil the health of the other children. If a child shows symptoms of any illness it will be placed in the room set aside for the doctor and will be given medical care. Every precaution will be taken as to the care and welfare of the little ones entrustd to the care of the nursery. For the larger children, who have nothing to do after school hours but run around on the street, sewing classes will be organized and other features of like nature arranged to bring them in and give them something useful to do. In the summer the large grounds will afford splendid places for children to play, who on account of their residence in a flat or apartment have small chance for a yard of their own. The location of the house seems ideal. It is just across the street from the Dewey School and in a rather thickly populated district, so that it will be able to serve a maximum amount of people. Is Nonsectarian The undertaking is a large one, and will involve a great amount of expense and time. The club cannot carry the burden alone and s expecting help from outside sources. The Associated Charities are there to help. Mrs. John F. Hahn, president of the club, announced that a number of ladies, who are not members of their church or organization, have already offered their assistance. Those who are connected with the nursery wish it understood that it is a nonsectarian movement and is open to all. Everyone needing the assistance that the nursery will be able to afford will be looked after. For a long time Evanston has needed a day nursery where mothers who are forced to work to support their children can leave the young folks while they are out working. The members of the Catholic Woman's club deserve much credit for starting such a movement in this city and they deserve the support of the citizens in this most worthy charity. The members of the governing board, elected from the Catholic Woman's Club are: Mrs. John F. Downey, Mrs. John F. Hahn, Mrs. J. Nolly, Mrs. P.E.V.B. Ward, Mrs. F.H. Spearman, Mrs. V.D. Castrain, Mrs. T.N. Hayes, Mrs. L.M. Kelly, Mrs. A. Schofield, Mrs. J.P. Hartray, Mrs. T. Tyriell. South Evanston Church Repaired Another Evanston church has been undergoing extensive interior changes, the Second Presbyterian church, corner of Hinman avenue and Main street, having undergone a great change. The walls have all been redecorated with a light cream color predominant. The wood work has been finished in a fumed oak color. A new inlaid linoleum covers the floor. The old gas fixtures have been removed and electric lights installed in their place. The seating of the church has been materially changed. Formerly the pulpit was in the center of the church with the pews running in an east and west direction. The old pulpit has been taken out and a new one placed in the northeast corner, surrounded with some very fine mill work. The pews have been arranged in a diagonal position running northeast and southwest. The extensive changes and repairs have rendered the interior of the church very attractive and comfortable Philadelphia, pa., Sepi il%yMEJSii t)ora aodriq.ues, a nineteen-year-old ' pleting a walk o| |5,000 miles.
