Fred M. Whiting, 53, of 2719 Eastwood Av., professor and assistant dean of Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism died Jan. 1 in Evanston Hospital. Born in Glenville, W. Va., he was graduated from Glenville State College. He attended graduate school at the University of Missouri and received a master's degree from Northwestern in 1947. Mr. Whiting joined the National Broadcasting Co. as a Chicago radio and television news writer and in 1949 joined the Northwestern faculty but continued to work part-time for NBC. In 1955 he left Northwestern and served as a general assignment reporter for NBC before rejoining the faculty in 1957. Mr. Whiting was co-editor of the book "The Radio-TV News Handbook", and was a member of the Radio-Television News Directors Association. He had served as chairman of the Freedom of Information Committee of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association and was former director of the Headline Club, the Chicago chapter of Sigma Delta Chi. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his widow, Frederica S.; two sons, William C., and Joseph K.; a daughter, Mary Sue; his father, Fred M. Whiting of Glenville, W. Va.; and a brother, Richard C., of Lynchburg, Va.
