New Trier will hold its annual 5K Run to Remember Sept. 18 in memory of three New Trier High School graduates killed in a tragic porch collapse in Chicago in 2003. Community members, parents, staff, and students are invited to register to run or walk.

Runners/walkers may register online, in person at the school, or on race day. Online registration can be completed at the Run to Remember website: www.newtrier.k12.il.us/runtoremember.aspx. In person registration is available through from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in Room F111 on the Northfield Campus, 7 Happ Road. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for students.

During the summer of 2003, as many as 50 people were gathered onto the second- and third-story porches of a Chicago apartment building when, without warning, the top porch collapsed onto the second and they both fell to the ground. Thirteen people were killed, including three New Trier High School graduates: Sam Farmer, Shea Fitzgerald and Julie Sorkin. All proceeds from the run go to scholarship funds and charities in their names.

The run begins at the Northfield Campus football stadium at 8 a.m., and race day registration is available until 7:50 a.m. All participants will receive a T-shirt.

Team doctor honored

Richard S. Sherman, longtime team doctor for New Trier High School and Trevian sports teams, will be honored at the Sept. 23 Homecoming football game for his 25 years of service to the District.

A New Trier West graduate and star running back on several great “Cowboy” teams, Sherman has served as team doctor for the football team and worked with countless other students and athletes during his tenure.

A reception will be held for Sherman on the north berm adjacent to the F Building beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, Sherman will be honored during a halftime presentation at the New Trier-Maine South varsity football game. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. All are invited join Sherman and celebrate his 25 years of service to New Trier and our student-athletes.
