Clarence W. Smith, a longtime resident of Evanston, IL, died at the age of 101 at his home in Evanston on April 16, 2011. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 30, 1909. Clarence studied engineering, history, and business at the University of Chicago where he met his wife, Jean Steffen Smith. He later became a Certified Public Accountant and spent his entire working career in the accounting field with some of Chicago's most prestigious firms. In 1943, Clarence and Jean gave birth to a son, Colin Steffen Smith. If you asked Clarence what the secrets to a long life were, he would tell you that great food and regular exercise were two of the most important. His wife, Jean, was a wonderful cook, and Clarence often hiked the streets of Evanston, getting his daily dose of exercise. In addition he was an avid reader and kept up with current events by reading the Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times of London every day, right up to the end. His wife, Jean, and son, Colin both died within the past three years. Clarence is survived by his former daughter in law, Beth Formiller, and his cousins from Canada, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bettle, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bettle. He will be buried with his wife in Antigo, WI.
