Mrs. John R. Sawyer has received word from the War Department that her husband, Lt. John R. Sawyer, was killed in action over Truk on June 2. Mrs. Sawyer is the former Elsie von der Lippen, daughter of Mr. and Mr. Fred von der Lippen of 1220 Lake Avenue, Wilmette. Her husband, a squadron leader, had been awarded the Air Medal and two OakLeaf Clusters. He was first pilot of a Liberator (B-24). His mother, Mrs. Ned Sawyer, lives in Evanston. MRs. Sawyer received a letter from Lt. Grant Hall, formerly of Evanston, who was bombardier in Lieutenant Sawyer's crew, which said that a Zero dove into the nose of the plane. Lieutenant Sawyer expected his captaincy this month. He and Mrs. Sawyer were married last year on May 22 in Tucson, Arizona.
