State legislators are pushing for consolidation to reduce the number of school districts in Illinois by as many as two-thirds. Two bills introduced Feb. 8 are House Bill 1216 sponsored by State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia (D-83rd) and another sponsored by State Sen. Jeffrey Schoenberg (D-9th) of Evanston. Under Senate Bill 1324 public hearings would take place in each district recommended for consolidation. The subsequent vote of the General Assembly would be binding on the affected districts. Targeted districts are not listed.
