Narjett Elizabeth (nee Chiles) Caruthers of Grayson, Ga., a former resident of Evanston for 43 years, died Nov. 25 in Atlanta. She was 89. Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Abbeville, S.C., she served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps for two years and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., and Fort Lewis, Wash. Mrs. Caruthers, also known as "Maggie," was employed at the Fleet Home-Town News Center at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, and the U.S. Postal Service in Evanston. She then worked at Washington National Insurance Co. in Evanston, where she retired after 12 years. According to relatives, Mrs. Caruthers spent most of her reitrement caring for, and loving, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Hershel; daughters Herschellene Hudson of Snellville, Ga., and Jewel Blackwell of Lithonia, Ga.; son Thomas Caruthers of Grayson, Ga; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Carrie Lou Lee of Greenville, S.C., and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta, with Interment in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Forest Park, Ga. Arrangements were handled by Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home in Atlanta.
