Describes disadvantages of ice melters or de-icers such as Halite aka rock salt, Potassium chloride, Calcium chloride and Magnesium chloride. Liquid ice melters such as ethylene glycol and potassium acetate must be sprayed on and are used primarily at airports. Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is a new and somewhat more environmentally safe alternative. Another product is Safe Paw.
