Wilmette teacher Cynthia Johnson lost control of her car during an insulin reaction hitting a tree near Hunter Road. Attempts to save her by bystanders, police and paramedics were unsuccessful. Motorists Eugene Maynard and Dr. Fabio Ortega, a Skokie physician, found Johnson unconscious, the car afire and the doors jammed closed by the impact. Wilmette Police Officer Jeffrey Hemesath was able to bend back the frame of one of the doors enough to get it open. He, Maynard and officers Michael Robinson and David Tesch were able to lift Johnson from the car moments before it was completely engulfed in flame. Wilmette paramedics arrived, but were unable to revive her. Johnson was the mother of three daughters, Stephanie, Eleanor and Kathryn, ranging in age from 25 to 20. Survivors also include her husband, Christopher, brother, Clifford S. Aspegren Jr., and nieces Jennifer, Anne and Kate Wallace and nephews Jared and Clifford S. Aspegren III, David Kuzel and Jake Wallace.
