Patent lawyer, Allen J. Hoover, 65, was one of three people shot to death Friday in a Loop law office by a man who insisted the first victim, Michael McKenna, had stolen his invention, a portable toilet for use by long-haul truckers. Joe Jackson was killed by Chicago police snipers after he killed McKenna, Hoover and office worker Paul Goodson, and wounded paralegal Ruth Zak Lieb. Comments by Hoover's friend, Samuel Pfeffer and neighbor, Erich Gibbs. Hoover's son, Allen E. Hoover, is also an attorney.
Hoover's survivors include his wife, Louise (nee Ganja); son Allen E. (Susanne); daughter Annette (John) Hering; two grandchildren; brother Edward F. (Marion Amling); two nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Allen H. and Margaret Hoover.
