On Nov. 7 voters in 21 Illinois townships including Moraine Township in Lake County and Schaumburg Township in Cook County, passed advisory referendums seeking an open primary process in Illinois, eliminating the requirement that voters publicly declare their political party affiliation before voting. Most attempts to change the primary voting process in Illinois have had little support from the leadership of either of the major political parties. Primary voting lists often are used by poolitical parties and candidates to target mailings to supporters during political campaigns.
