William Schmedtgen, noted artist and cartoonist, passed away at his home, 710 Greenleaf avenue, Wilmette, Tuesday morning. He was 74 years old. Born in Chicago, Mr. Schmedtgen studied at the Art Institute and began his career as a pioneer in newspaper illustration. An invalid for several years, he was attacked by influenza which later developed into pneumonia, the cause of his death. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at Rosehill cemetery on Thursday afternoon. He was survived by his widow, Mrs. Clara Thurnan Schmedtgen, and by a daughter, Mrs. Alan Copeland Collins of Philadelphia.
